Why I Love Nantucket: Short Essay

Nantucket is...

Nantucket is waking up to a golden sunrise over Pebble Beach from my grandmother’s home. With birds soaring and sea-gulls squawking, the waves crash along the coast of Tom Nevers. Nantucket is waking up and sneaking past the rooms of the adults to turn on the downstairs television.

Nantucket is riding my bicycle to Siasconset Town Center to pick up a Snickers Ice Cream Bar with my mother and father. In the post office, where everyone knows each other by name, I watch my grandmother open her Nantucket Basket, searching for postage.

Nantucket is growing up and taking the younger cousins to turtle snap in Madaket. It is a place to meet life-long friends from around the world: Bulgaria, Russia, and Lithuania to name a just a few. Nantucket is a place to forget your work and a place to leave the bustling world behind.

Turkey Summer 2009

I've just gotten back home from a two week tour around Turkey. In the photo, we're standing outside the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Istanbul was lots of fun and full of great shopping. There are so many sites to see in Istanbul that it is hard to list them all. The best were: Galata Tower, Bosphorous Cruise, Grand Bazzar, Topaki Place, Blue Mosque, Suleyman Mosque (althought it is currently undergoing restoration), Hagia (Aya) Sophia, Basilica Cisterns (my personal favourite), and the Church of St. Savoir in Chora (also a personal favourite).

Cappadocia, Turkey had the best valley walks and unusual land formations. I got to ride the oldest camel in Cappadocia who was 38 years old.

In Pammukale we swam in the Antique Thermal Pool and walked down the cascading hot springs known as the Cotton Castle. We visited the Hierapolis, which is an ancient Roman city.

In Ephesus we visited the last home of the Virgin Mary, made a wish on the Wish Wall, and visited what remains of the Ancient Wonder of the World: The Temple of Apollo.

We stayed in Kusadasi (pronounced 'kush-ah-das-ee') for three days and soaked up the sun on the beaches and in the Aegean Sea. Kusadasi is best known as one of Turkey's top resort towns.

My 3d Dance Animation

Work In Progress!!!
I did a dance animation for my character animation final last spring. Since then, I've been working on adding more animation and refining the keys. Currently the tangents are splined, for the smoothest animation results, but most of the animation was done with stepped keys. The choreography is adapted from Polina Seminova's contemporary ballet piece that is very popular among dancers. The music is by: Herbert Grönemeyer, which is also used in the dance piece that Seminova is dancing to. And special thanks to HighEnd 3d for supplying me with the Andy rig! As soon as I get the video compressed, I'll post it here! For now, a still render will do!

Skull Cap now working in Maya Fur!

It was a relief to get the skull cap working in Maya Fur. I'm not trying to get the Renderman engine to render out both output fur descriptions (one for the body and one for the skull) together, so that I don't have to render them out in separate passes. However, I think it might make sense to render them separately and composite them later. To see the fur pass of the body, please see my older posts.

Maya Fur & Sunny the Llama

Currently, I'm working in Maya 2008 and trying to get Sunny the llama's fur working around the face. Maya Fur is a nightmare compared to Shave and a Haircut, but I'll making some progress.

I can't seem to get short hairs around the face though, and with even coverage.

Here is an image that I took with Maya Software of Sunny with 2 fur descriptions. I added a second fur description to it's head only, by using a skull cap, to hopefully gain greater density around the face.

Still working on it...

A couple of days ago I had a dance reunion with a few girls I had danced with at International Ballet School, Colorado Ballet, Julia's, and other places around town. A few years ago, I had decided to take the college route instead of pursuing a career as a professional ballerina. This was an incredibly difficult decision for me, as well as incredibly easy. I had been dancing since the age of 3, and had given up my chance at a normal life to practice in the studios for hours each day. But on the other side of things, I wanted a social life, a proper college education, and to be able to eat more than vegtables and yogurts.

The picture shown is of me (burgundy leotard and black skirt) and my friend Emily Small (left) during a Pas a deux class taught by (will remember name and put in here) at Boston Ballet. We're taking class in studio 8, which is located on the top level and has observation window for parents and other students to watch us from (and from where this photo was taken from).

Now that I've been off dance for a number of years, I think I'm ready to go back. And if I can find any more pictures or videos of BB SDP 2000 and 2001 floating on the internet, I'd love to have them!

Shave and a Haircut Fur Test 01

I tested out the Shave and a Haircut software at school for the senior project I was working on. Although our pipeline called for Maya Fur only, I wanted to spend a few minutes in the Shave software to see what I could create for llama fur. After only just a few minutes, I was able to have full control over the direction, length, colour, and spec of the hair strands.

I would have preferred to use Shave over Fur since it gives the animator more control over hair attributes, our lab only had 6 Shave render licenses, which could have posed a problem later and increased render times for the llamas. Posted is a test render of the fur test I had created in Shave after only a few minutes.

Final Llemitt the Llama Maya Fur Image

Here is a final render of the Maya Fur I created within Maya 2008. The llama has many painted attribute maps, as well as a combination of preset fur settings. I rendered the llama out in Maya 2008 after adding a simple 3-point lighting set up. I will render out a turntable with the Renderman render engine in the next few days.

For the current undergrad senior production, I was put in charge of Maya Fur and Hair as Character Finisher Technical Lead and Director. My fellow classmate and friend created the concept art for Llemitt the llama. He then modeled and textured the character within Maya and Mudbox. I was then given the sculpted model and was given the task to create Maya Fur for him. Here is what Llemitt looked like right after getting the Maya Fur length attribute maps to work.

The Republic of San Marino

Within the borders of Italy, lies another country: the Republic of San Marino. We stayed the night in this small country and walked between its towers during the day.

Cinque Terra, Italia

We camped for two nights in the Cinque Terra region along the Mediterranean. The second day we hiked the Cinque Terra trail. Since we started the hike at noon in the hot, blazing sun, I refused to hike the last trail. We decided to eat lunch right along the Med and then took the ferry that docked adjacent to the restaurant to the last town of Monterosso al Mare. The picture I took is of town of Corniglia. However, my favourite town was Vernazza.

Venice, Italy

I took this picture of the Grand Canal in the Summer of 2008 in Venice, Italy. We spent two nights in Venice before, my boyfriend and I, took an independent tour of Italy.

After spending a week in Serre de Rappallano, located just outside of Siena, I met my boyfriend in Venice. After spending two nights in a wonderful B&B, which had a Harry Potter-like entrance, we took the train to the Cinque Terra Region. Each of us had our own Global Eurail Passes, which made trip very relaxed and worry-free.

Current Animation Projects

Over winter break I will be working on a few individual animation projects.

Currently, I am rebuilding my Alhambra Environment, based on the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. My original environment was built completely from Nurbs surfaces. My new environment will now include the entire Alhambra and Generalife grounds, and will be built from Poly surfaces. Above is a screen capture of my block model.
